About The Designer
Ferdinand Alexander Porsche was the creator of one of the most recognisable and sought-after sports cars of the 20th century: The Porsche 911. Ask a someone who is not a car enthusiast to identify a Ferrari or a Lamborghini and they may struggle. Ask them to identify a Porsche 911, and they'll at least know what make of car it is, if not the model. A testament to Porsche's design skills, he thought of himself not as an artist or designer, but as a craftsman. 'FA', as he was known to his colleagues and friends, was born in 1935 and went on to study industrial design in Ulm, Germany. His design style was 'function first' - despite the Porsche 911 (and Porsche's subsequent products) being iconic for their looks; they were designed to be practical, functional and carry out the task they were intended for without letting aesthetics get in the way. Ferdinand designed the 911 in 1962, and after great success, he left the car manufacturer ten years later to setup Porsche Design Group.
Porsche Design was Ferdinand Porsche's way of breaking away from the family management, focusing on industrial product design. The first product was a watch, the Chrono 1 which was a continuation of one of FA's designs while working for the family car company. It was the first watch to feature black as the piece's main colour; this was, of course, for practical reasons - the contrast of white hands on a black background made it very easy to read compared to the gold and silver timepieces available prior to this. Porsche Design then went on to develop their second iconic product: sunglasses, specifically the 'Exclusive'.
