Celine History

Celine fashion house was founded in 1945 by Celine Vipiana. Alongside her husband, she created beautiful made to measure childrens shoes for elite Parisienne society. The business flourished, later turning to ladieswear and fine leather goods. In 1964 a fragrance was added, and in the 70s the Celine brand was further enhanced by the addition of boutiques in exclusive location such as Monte Carlo, Hong Kong and Geneva. The founder continued to direct the creation of fine leather goods, including handbags, for which the company has become most famous.
Celine took a leap in status, when in 1997 Michael Kors took over as creative director. Leaving 7 years later, Kors modernised the house and left a strong legacy of clean shapes, neutral colour tones throughout all lines including sunglasses and glasses. His time at Celine coincided with great expansion globally.
He was followed by the now famous british creative director Phoebe Philo. Philo has continued from where Kors left off, continuing the strong themes of contemporary minimalism, whilst bringing her own ideas to the fore, pushing the Celine house to new heights over her 10 years with the fashion house.
After Philo announcing her departure from the brand in early 2018, Hedi Slimane took over and has been the creative director since. Slimane has taken a slightly controversial approach to his role- removing the accent from the Celine name. His usual style would have been rock and roll vibes, however at Celine he appears to be retiring from his own style and driving through with traditional Celine "bourgeois" vision. Hedi Slimane has also introduced a menswear collection, a first for the maison.
