Models named after celebrities? Check. Retro inspired look? Check. Exotic materials, aged wooden case and thick acetate? Check. Yes, super-brand Superdry has started making glasses, and they seem to have got it right first time. Their frames are all about the little details; brushed 'worn' acetate, real Japanese bamboo temples, 7 barrel hinges, and laser-etched text. The collection incorporates cat's eyes, half frames (Clubmaster-style), Wayfarer shapes, as well as round frames such as the Depp
models. The comparison to Ray Ban here is difficult to avoid; however, this is certainly not a copycat situation. The Superdry eyewear range
easily stands on its own, thanks to their extreme attention to detail and their I-can-tell-it's-not-cheap-just-by-holding-it level of quality. In case you've been hiding under a rock impervious to fashion and the media for the last few years, Superdry is a clothing and accessories brand sold across 4 continents, in 40 countries.
At the classic 'geek glasses' end of things, Superdry have created the the Brando
. These all offer thick-rimmed styling, with each adding their own twist on things: The Officer includes leather temples, giving them a well-used, patched-up look. The female-oriented Riley includes bare aluminium arms, which show off a cool retro/modern contrast. The Jetstar offers contrasting brighter colours, moving away from the tortoise-shell/havana/black combos of some of the other Superdry opticals. They don't offer anything quite as garish and bold as some of the Wayfarer colours however. Finally the Brando is a thick-set, high-gloss acetate offering. It has Wayfarer inspired shape, with wing emblems on the temples. (Left to right: Brando, Jetstar, Riley)
They made three half-frame models, the Caine
. The Caine is similar to a Ray Ban Clubmaster
; with an aluminium nose bridge and high-gloss acetate finish, but a more squared-off lens design makes it a little more Mad Men
than Hollywood glamour. The Navigator tones the design of the Caine down a bit, dropping the aluminium for a less risqu̩ look. The Harper (female frame) goes rounder, adds more flared temples and is a wee bit more glamorous. (Left to right, Caine, Harper, Navigator)
(below, left) and Daisy
make up the cat's eye designs, with the Daisy the more outgoing shape. Both are distinctly feminine, with colour options such as 'Blush' (A pink to black fade) and 'Tokyo Tort' (A bright leopard-print-like design). The Depp
(below, left) includes bamboo temples (made from real bamboo!) and a round frame inspired, obviously, by its namesake. The Dean
gives a harsher, rectangular look, with very thick arms and prominent Superdry logos.
The Superdry collection starts at £84.90, including free UK delivery.
