What do Steve McQueen and Italian eyewear company Persol have in common? Aside from being the epitome of cool, they’ve both featured in some of the most iconic films of the 20th century.
Persols have featured in James Bond movies Casino Royale and Die Another Day, wrapped around the face of both Daniel Craig and Pierce Brosnan. They have also made an appearance on Bill Murray in Lost in Translation, amongst other famous actors.

The most famous pairing however, is Steve Mcqueen’s Persol blue-lensed havana 714s in The Thomas Crown Affair. The original pair of 714s in that film were auctioned off in 2006 for the staggering sum of £36000 to an anonymous collector. If, like most of us, you don’t have tens of thousands of pounds to spend on sunglasses, then you’ll be pleased to hear that Persol have brought the classic style back with a special edition of the 714 – the Persol 714SM.

They are producing just 10000 of the Persol 714SM folding sunglasses, all hand made in Italy. They hinge at the nose, as well as halfway down each arm, allowing the glasses to fold up roughly the area of one lens. Unlike previous editions of the 714, the arms hinge horizontally, rather than vertically – meaning they fold up slightly smaller than before. They come with a distinctive leather case, featuring the Steve McQueen logo embossed onto the front.

Blue lens tints were said to be McQueen's favourite
